some Teachers are asking why...

by Tom Lauder and Chris Leggatt

UPDATE: According to the Broward Clerk Of Courts website, Ms. Schultz entered into this arrangement on March 21, 2012. Schultz received probation for the misdemeanor charge of violation of campaign contributions. The record says this offense took place on August 25, 2010.  A hearing scheduled for April 5, 2012 has been cancelled. The original story follows below:

The scandal surrounding the Broward Teachers Union continues to grow. Last November, reports surfaced of an investigation involving illegal campaign contributions made by Union officials. BTU President Pat Santeramo resigned amid reports the Union reimbursed board members for political contributions to Democrat gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink. The Miami Herald reported Santeramo was the subject of investigations by several law enforcement agencies:

“On Nov. 14, four board members penned a petition calling for Santeramo’s removal, which led to the union’s executive board voting to hand over the day-to-day operations of the union to the AFT for the next six months, giving Santeramo time to deal with the investigations by the Broward State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Elections Commission.”

Bernie Schultz

Today, a senior law enforcement official confirmed to Media Trackers Florida that Bernie Schultz, a Union first vice-president will enter into a plea agreement to lesser charges in exchange for testimony against Santeramo and others. The official believes this illegal union practice has gone on for many election cycles but the statute of limitations may prevent further charges.
As we reported here, this scandal has caused many teachers to question the Union’s role in partisan politics.
The Broward Teachers Union did not return our request for a comment.
